Counseling Philosophy
I believe psychotherapy, sometimes referred to just as counseling or therapy, is one of
the most beneficial and potentially life-transforming activities one can undertake. I believe
the best psychotherapy works from a holistic perspective, incorporating and addressing all
the influences on our well-being -- our biology, social skills and environment, behavior,
thinking patterns, emotional tendencies and spiritual vitality.
Theoretical Orientation
In my practice of psychotherapy, I blend a number of psychological theories selected to
best serve your particular issues and concerns. These include family systems theory,
cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialetical behavior therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and
humanistic and existential principles. In lay terms this means a holistic approach that
considers all the cultural, relational, behavioral, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions
of the human experience.
Approach to Therapy
My approach begins with a thorough assessment focused on family/social dynamics, your
personal belief system and consideration of your developmental, medical, educational,
occupational, and relationship history. From the information gathered in the assessment
process, I work collaboratively with you to identify specific goals and develop a treatment
approach tailored to your specific needs.
In addition to traditional talk therapy, I am trained in EMDR, a highly effective and efficient
treatment for a variety of mental health concerns including post traumatic stress. I also
offer several alternative, research-based therapies for individuals suffering from mood
disorders who desire not to take medication.
Through the course of your counseling I periodically review the treatment plan, assess
progress toward your goals, and re-evaluate your ongoing needs and concerns.
Education
I received my Master of Arts Degree from Chapman University in California majoring in
Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling. My undergraduate
degree is a Bachelor of Arts from the University of San Francisco majoring in Organizational
Behavior. I also have a year of postgraduate education from University of California at
Santa Barbara focusing on sociology and social psychology.
