When we, or someone we love, experience a mental health crisis or become victims of
violent crime, it is often difficult to think clearly about how to get help in a timely manner.
The following resources and phone numbers, organized by topic, are provided as a quick
reference should you find yourself in need of this information.

Emergency Contact:  In the event of a life-threatening emergency or injury, call
911 immediately.
SUICIDE

IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT HARMING YOURSELF OR ATTEMPTING SUICIDE, TELL
SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP RIGHT AWAY:

  • Call your doctor’s office.
  • Call 911 for emergency services.
  • Go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
  • Call one of the following toll-free 24-hour hotlines to be connected to a trained
    counselor:

    1-800-273-TALK           (1-800-273-8255)

    1-800-SUICIDE            (1-800-784-2433)

  • Ask a family member or friend to help you make these calls or take you to the
    hospital.

IF YOU HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND IN A CRISIS:

DO NOT leave your family member or friend alone who is suicidal.  Try to get him or her to
seek help immediately from one of the resources listed above.  Any comments about
suicide or wishing to die should be taken seriously.  Even if you do not believe your family
member or friend will actually attempt suicide, he or she is clearly in distress and needs to
receive immediate mental health treatment.
